Samuel Noah Kramer (1897-1990) was an American historian specializing in ancient Near Eastern studies, particularly Sumerology. He is best known for his translation of the Sumerian King List and his book History Begins at Sumer, which detailed the innovations and achievements of ancient Sumerian civilization. Kramer received his PhD from the University of Pennsylvania and taught at the University of Chicago and the University of Pennsylvania. He was also a notable philanthropist, donating millions to academic and cultural institutions in the United States and abroad.
